Personality:

Davik is a "hard-nosed" leader, demanding excellence from everyone under his command. This (and his family name) has earned him the nickname of "Hard Vik" (though most people don't call him that to his face, the shorter version of simply "Vik" is used then). However, despite his "hard-nosed" attitude, he is a compassionate man, full of his spiritual beliefs and intensely loyal to his friends and crew.

Background:

Davik is the son of Hardin Shalara, a strong-willed Bajoran woman, who was raped by a band of Cardassian soldiers during the Occupation of Bajor. Miss Hardin was left for dead, battered and bleeding from the brutal assault. She managed to survive, eventually coming under the care of a Bajoran Resistance Cell Leader, Bekot Jadir.

Ten months later, she gave birth to her son, naming him Davik after an historic Bajoran Kai who suffered many afflictions to prove his devotion to the Prophets (in the manner of the Human Biblical figure of Job).

Eventually, Bekot and Miss Hardin fell in love, and Bekot took her and her son as his own family. While his mother and adoptive father always showed him love and affection, and he had his share of close friends, Davik grew up a Cardassian half-breed in a Bajoran Resistance Cell moving across Bajor, and he was usually distrusted by Bajorans on first sight due to his Cardassian features. Bekot and Miss Hardin were never "legally" married, so Davik kept the family name of Hardin.

Davik's mother and adoptive father, and later Davik himself, were active in the Bajoran Resistance, but his parents, and most of their Cell, were killed in a traitorous setup by Collaborators and Cardassians when he was only 15 years of age. During this fight, Davik was hit by flying shrapnel which ripped open his face and left him unconscious. Other survivors of the Cell rescued him and gave him the medical attention he needed, but the scar remains vivid across his left cheek. Davik refuses dermal regeneration because the scar is a reminder of the terrible price of becoming overly confident of one's success.

Left with no family he sank into depression and fell out of the Resistance. He wandered Bajor, skirting the cities and dodging the Cardassians for several years. At the age of 20, he eventually found himself among the other workers at Terok Nor (later known by the Federation as Deep Space Nine).

One day, a series of fortunate events found him in the Hangar Bay with only a single overseer and a fully equipped Cardassian shuttle standing by. He killed the Cardassian with several blows to the head with a large packing tool and stole the shuttle. He managed to get the shuttle into warp before the Cardassians were able to mount a pursuit and made his way to Federation Space. Davik believes to this day that the Prophets had chosen that time for him to leave Bajor.

He soon entered into the shipping industry, first as a handy-man and repair technician (he was great at troubleshooting and at "jury-rigging" repairs, making do with available materials), and then as a partner in a freighter company.

A run-in with Federation transport laws found him incarcerated for two years for violating sanctions against selling weapons to Nausicaans. While incarcerated he became intrigued by the Starfleet officers who surrounded him. Upon his release he applied and was accepted into Starfleet Academy. He was 27 years old. Again, his quick acceptance into Starfleet seemed divinely inspired and Davik believes the Prophets had ordained it.

His career in Starfleet has been steady and he has been decorated several times for various actions. He served in Engineering for several years, but has also been certified as an Emergency Medical Technician, and he is certified as an Advanced Pilot. He resisted the first efforts to convince him to enter the Command track, and his career stalled with him as a Lieutenant for many years. Finally he agreed to "look into" Command. He quickly progressed to full Commander and has most recently served as Executive Officer of the USS Dauntless during the Dominion War. His exploits during the War were remarkable and he was highly decorated. He has always claimed the Prophets were "looking out for him" because they had something planned for him.

As the Commanding Officer of the USS Maverick, a Prometheus-Class Vessel, he was given the assignment of patrolling the borders of Breen space in the Dark Expanse on the fringe of the galaxy. But as of the new year, SD 0501.01 the Maverick has been reassigned to Space Station Nigala to guard against another Krellite invasion.
